GOST 5233-2021 applies to paints and varnishes and establishes a quantitative method for determining the hardness of a paint coating using a TML type pendulum device and establishes a method for determining hardness by reducing the number of pendulum oscillations on single-layer coatings or multi-layer coatings obtained on the basis of various paint and varnish systems. This method is not recommended for hardness testing of textured paints, metallic effect coatings and thick coatings.

The type of pendulum used must be specified in the regulatory and technical documentation for the tested paint and varnish material.
